British tennis player Mika Stojsavljevic achieved her first WTA Tour main-draw victory at the Hong Kong Open, upsetting former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. The 17-year-old, ranked world number 411, advanced as a lucky loser from qualifying and was informed of her main-draw match with just an hour's notice.
Stojsavljevic secured the win with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 scoreline in a closely contested final set. "I kind of just went out and swung today," Stojsavljevic stated after the match. "I know she's a Grand Slam champion and it was never going to be an easy match, but I believed in myself and it worked out."
Kenin, 27, who won the Australian Open in 2020, is ranked 224 places higher than Stojsavljevic. The British teenager recorded six winners compared to her opponent's zero and saved three of the eight break points she faced.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Stojsavljevic, following another notable win earlier in the year when she defeated then world number 56 Talia Gibson during Billie Jean King Cup qualifying in April. Stojsavljevic began playing tennis at the age of seven and later won the US Open junior title in 2024, becoming the first British player to do so in 15 years. She reached a career-high junior ranking of fifth and turned professional in 2025. She also reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 event in Birmingham earlier this year.
Stojsavljevic is scheduled to play against world number 67 Zeynep Sonmez in the second round of the Hong Kong Open.
