Teenage British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, died Friday following a collision with a car during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal race, his NSN Cycling Team announced. The driver reportedly missed signs from race stewards and entered the road traveling in the opposite direction of the event.
Tarling received immediate medical attention at the scene, which occurred between Melgaço and Fafe in northern Portugal. It remains unclear if any other riders were involved in the incident. The eighth stage of the race was halted as a mark of respect and mourning.
"We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today," NSN Cycling Team stated on social media platform X. "Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed."
The Volta a Portugal organization and the Portuguese Cycling Federation extended their condolences to Tarling's family, teammates, and friends. Portuguese President António José Seguro and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also sent messages of sympathy.
Tarling was the younger brother of Ineos Grenadiers cyclist Joshua Tarling. He represented Great Britain in both road and track cycling events and had recently placed second in Stage 6 of the Tour du Rwanda.
