Brian Sabean, who recently concluded his tenure with the Yankees as an executive assistant to GM Brian Cashman, has been named as one of eight candidates on the Contemporary Baseball Era ballot for the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Yankees organization decided not to retain Sabean for the 2027 season. Sabean's baseball career spans decades, including his early work with the Yankees in the 1980s and 1990s, where he was instrumental in developing the "Core Four" players. He later served as the general manager for the San Francisco Giants, leading them to three World Series championships.

"I’m blown away. I’m beyond humbled,” Sabean stated in a phone interview. “It’s flattering because of the strength of the ballot. It’s such an august group. I think I’m the only person on it that’s not an icon in the sport.”

Among the other candidates on the ballot, which focuses on managers and executives with significant contributions from the late 20th century, are Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy. Sabean hired both Baker and Bochy to manage the Giants during his time with the team. The ballot also includes Sandy Alderson, Joe Maddon, Lou Piniella, Ted Turner, and Bill White.
