The New York Islanders have named Bo Horvat their new captain, the team announced Monday morning. Horvat, who previously served as captain for the Vancouver Canucks, now becomes the 16th captain in Islanders franchise history.

He steps into the role previously held by Anders Lee, who captained the team since John Tavares’ departure in 2018. Lee departed the Islanders this summer in free agency, signing with the Utah team after negotiations with New York stalled.

Horvat was considered a strong candidate for the captaincy. He had worn an alternate captain’s “A” for the Islanders and was seen as a leader within the locker room during his tenure on Long Island. Coach Pete DeBoer had indicated in August that a captain would likely be named after discussions during training camp.

Anders Lee, the previous Islanders captain, left for the Mammoth in free agency.
