Blake Snell's Injury Adds Urgency to Dodgers' Rotation Concerns

The Los Angeles Dodgers' vaunted starting rotation is facing mounting questions just as the postseason approaches, with left-hander Blake Snell departing his latest start early due to a tight left groin. This latest setback, following concerns about Shohei Ohtani's arm and Tyler Glasnow's recent outings, has cast a shadow over what was considered the team's greatest strength.
Snell was removed from Wednesday's start in Cincinnati after only one inning. He had previously experienced a similar left groin strain in 2024 while with the San Francisco Giants, which sidelined him for a month. While Snell reportedly believes the injury is not severe and intends to make his next scheduled start, the recurring nature of such ailments, particularly in the context of Ohtani's own injury issues, has amplified concerns.
Adding to the unease, pitcher Tyler Glasnow did not travel with the team to Cincinnati, instead heading directly home from Miami. Manager Dave Roberts stated Glasnow's absence from the trip was to help him acclimate to Pacific Standard Time and prepare for his upcoming start at Dodger Stadium. Glasnow has faced his own challenges, having previously missed 3 1/2 months due to back issues. His last two starts have been inconsistent, giving up a combined eight runs and 11 hits in 10 innings.
The timing of these pitching concerns is particularly worrying for the Dodgers, who have relied heavily on their starting pitching to compensate for an inconsistent offense and a bullpen that has shown flashes of volatility. The team had appeared to be rounding into playoff form, with Snell in particular pitching exceptionally well since returning from elbow surgery in August. Prior to his early exit, Snell was 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA in his starts since being activated.
Other key members of the rotation have also shown promising signs. Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched seven scoreless innings against the Reds, improving his record to 14-8 with a 2.51 ERA and expressing confidence in his physical condition heading into October. Tarik Skubal, acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline, also delivered a strong performance, pitching seven scoreless innings against the Reds in his recent outing, following up a 7 1/3 inning start.
Despite these individual successes, the accumulation of injuries and inconsistencies has shifted the perception of the Dodgers' pitching staff. What was once viewed as an intimidating quartet, potentially including Ohtani (as a hitter), Snell, Glasnow, and Yamamoto, now faces an uncertain future. The possibility of needing to rely on pitchers like Roki Sasaki or Emmet Sheehan in critical playoff games, and the potential impact on bullpen usage, highlights the fragile nature of their championship aspirations. The Dodgers' season may hinge on how quickly and effectively their key pitchers can return to full health and performance.
