Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic has drawn criticism for his performance during a quarterfinal match at the Los Cabos Open, where he lost decisively to Cameron Norrie. The match concluded with a score of 6-1, 6-0 in favor of Norrie, lasting only 51 minutes. Tomic managed to win only the opening game of the contest.
Reports indicate that Tomic's effort significantly diminished during the final service game of the first set. After winning the initial point, Tomic was observed making lazy shots, including two wide forehands and a softly hit third forehand into the net, before double-faulting to concede the set. He finished the match with 40 unforced errors.
This marked one of the shortest matches of Tomic's career. He has been involved in several of the fastest matches in ATP history, including a 28-minute defeat in 2014. Friday's loss was his 16th career match ending in 50 minutes or less.
Fans expressed outrage on social media, describing Tomic's play as "lackadaisical" and calling him "a disgrace to tennis" due to his apparent lack of effort. The performance followed a significant victory just days earlier, where Tomic defeated Karen Khachanov, the No. 4 seed and world No. 26, in the Round of 16.
Tomic, 33, has recently spoken about contemplating retirement. However, he also achieved a notable comeback win at the Lincoln Classic earlier in the month. His most successful period on tour included reaching the quarterfinals of his home Grand Slam, the Australian Open, three times between 2012 and 2016.
