For the first time in 72 years, the BBC is not providing comprehensive coverage of the Commonwealth Games, a move that has drawn criticism from fans and athletes. TNT Sports has secured the live UK broadcast rights, reportedly for £5 million, making televised English-language coverage accessible only through an HBO subscription. Radio coverage has also shifted from the BBC to talkSPORT.

The BBC, which has broadcast the Games since 1954, reportedly attempted to extend its partnership but was outbid and has indicated a prioritization of other events. While live English-language broadcasts are behind a paywall, some coverage is available for free on BBC Alba, the broadcaster's Gaelic channel, through agreements for indigenous language broadcasts. Channel 5 will air highlights, interspersed with advertisements.

Critics argue that the BBC's public funding model should obligate it to show national sporting events. Similar concerns were raised regarding the BBC's scaled-back coverage of the World Cup, where pundits remained primarily in a studio setting. In 2022, the BBC broadcast 200 hours of Commonwealth Games action across multiple streams.

Organizers of the Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Sport, have faced financial difficulties, leading to accusations that they prioritized a more lucrative broadcast deal over broader free-to-air access. This year's event in Glasgow was nearly canceled after the original host, Victoria, Australia, withdrew due to projected costs. Glasgow stepped in to host a more streamlined version, featuring ten sports compared to the 19 seen four years ago.

Former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies criticized the BBC's initial offer and what she called a "bad decision" by the Games' organizing committee, stating that adequate exposure is crucial for the future of the Games. Gymnast Luke Whitehouse noted the diminished publicity, acknowledging that while viewers can still watch, it is not freely accessible. Fans have also expressed disappointment online about the lack of readily available free-to-air options.

King Charles officially opened the Games on Thursday. The event features 3,000 athletes competing in 215 events, with over 1,000 medals to be awarded. The BBC declined to comment on the situation.
