Former Bayern Munich midfielder Didi Hamann has expressed doubts regarding the club's decision to extend Harry Kane's contract, calling it a significant 'risk.' Kane, 33, has reportedly agreed to a two-year extension that would make him the highest-paid English athlete in the world, with a weekly wage of £400,000.
Hamann suggested that Kane's age is a primary concern, noting that he will be 36 by the time the new contract expires. "Whether he'll still be scoring goals in the coming years, we'll see," Hamann told Sky Germany. He also pointed to Kane's performances in recent major tournaments, stating that the striker did not perform well for England at the European Championship two years ago and struggled in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
The former German international also speculated that Kane's decision to extend with Bayern might have been influenced by a lack of comparable offers from English clubs. "I don't think there were any major suitors from England," Hamann said. He believes that English teams might have been willing to pay a transfer fee in the range of £20-30 million, but Bayern would likely have sought a much higher return on the initial €100 million paid to Tottenham in 2023, making a move less feasible.
Kane has had a prolific career since joining Bayern Munich. In three seasons, he has scored 102 Bundesliga goals in as many games and provided 28 assists, securing the Bundesliga Golden Boot each year. His contributions have helped Bayern win two consecutive Bundesliga titles and a DFB-Pokal. Despite these achievements, Hamann has previously been critical of Kane's role at the club, suggesting last season that his involvement was 'unacceptable' when he was seen winning balls in his own penalty area.
