Tyler Forney, a long-time player for the Adelaide Angels, has lost the sight in one eye following a freak accident during a South Australian Baseball League match. The incident occurred last weekend when Forney was struck by a foul ball off his own bat while playing against Woodville.

Despite undergoing surgery, doctors were unable to save the vision in his injured eye. Forney, originally from Arizona, had relocated to Australia a decade ago and was in his 11th season with the Angels, having played his 300th game for the club earlier this year. The injury marks an unexpected end to his playing career.

The Adelaide baseball community has mobilized to support Forney and his young family as he begins his recovery and transitions to life beyond the sport. A fundraiser has been established to assist him, with the club describing Forney as a "model teammate, competitor and ambassador for the game."

"While Ty's playing career has come to an unexpected end, the impact he has made on the Adelaide Baseball Club and wider baseball community will endure for many years to come," the fundraiser states. "Time and time again, Ty made the extraordinary look routine, showcasing an athleticism and natural ability that were truly special to watch." The fundraising effort had garnered nearly $16,000 within several days, with support also coming from rival clubs wishing Forney well.

Originally from Arizona in the US, Forney relocated to Australia a decade ago and was in his 11th season with the Angels.
