The Australian netball team, known as the Diamonds, is garnering attention at the Commonwealth Games not only for their strong on-court performances but also for issues surrounding their team uniforms. Social media has seen a surge of fan commentary expressing frustration over the fit of the players' dresses, with many suggesting the attire is uncomfortable and requires constant adjustment.
Commenters have questioned the design and material of the uniforms, with one user on X remarking, 'Such a shame Diamonds ran out of material before they could finish their dresses. Some of the girls look uncomfortable af.' Another user noted, 'These dimes dresses look uncomfortable... I heard they were too long so players got them hemmed. But there's no give without the extra fabric.. should of cut a slit on the side panels.'
Goal shooter Sophie Garbin acknowledged the fan feedback but stated that the uniform adjustments do not affect her or her teammates' play. "I feel like as a netballer, I'm always tugging my dress down," Garbin said. "Obviously, we've noticed lots of the comments from other people. But I feel like on the court, we're used to dresses coming up and down, and I don't think it's affecting our performance, so it's okay."
Garbin added that the team is looking into potential solutions but expressed pride in the uniform's design and fabric. "We might have a look what we can do in the next couple of days but we love our dress. We love what Valour have done with the pattern and the fabric and everything, so we're really proud to wear it."
Despite the uniform concerns, the Diamonds have demonstrated exceptional form in the tournament. As defending gold medallists, they have scored 165 goals across their first two games. Their decisive victory over England with a score of 66-47 highlighted their dominance, with Garbin contributing 41 goals from 42 attempts. The team is scheduled to play Malawi on Tuesday and South Africa on Wednesday, followed by a match against Northern Ireland. Based on their initial performances, the Diamonds appear to be on track to defend their gold medal title.
