Matt Richardson, a 27-year-old Commonwealth champion cyclist, has switched his racing allegiance from Australia to England, citing a desire to access greater resources and pursue new career opportunities. Born in Maidstone, Kent, Richardson moved to Australia at age nine and previously represented Australia, winning gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and Olympic silver in the men's keirin in Paris in 2024.

Richardson described the British cycling program as "Hogwarts" due to its extensive resources, state-of-the-art equipment, and proximity to a wind tunnel. He noted that the European-based training environment minimizes the impact of jet lag, a significant advantage when traveling from Australia for competitions.

His decision to race for England also allows him to be closer to his girlfriend, fellow Olympic medallist Emma Finucane, who will represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games. The couple lives together in Manchester.

Richardson acknowledged that his move might be viewed negatively in Australia, where he anticipates facing former teammates. He stated that he anticipated this reaction and that the transition has been positive since its inception. He is aiming for gold at the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships, with a particular focus on winning the individual sprint world title and building momentum for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

He has previously set records, becoming the first rider to break the nine-second barrier on a 200-meter flying lap and defeating rival Harrie Lavreysen in February. Richardson has also drawn inspiration from figures like Sir Chris Hoy and discussed the shared elements of risk and adrenaline with Formula One driver Lando Norris.
