Australian athletics is mourning the sudden death of promising middle-distance runner Natasha Ward, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 21. The news was announced jointly by NSW Athletics and the Sutherland District Athletics Club.
A cause of death has not been made public. Ward was recognized for her achievements in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m events. As a junior athlete, she secured a medal at the NSW All Schools competition in the 1500m.
She continued her success into her senior career, earning a medal at the UniSport Nationals in the 1500m in 2023. In April of this year, Ward claimed the bronze medal in the 800m at the same event. She also competed in the 2024 Australian Championships.
Beyond her competitive achievements, Ward was remembered for her positive impact on the athletics community. Her club highlighted her kindness, joy, and support for fellow athletes, noting that her enthusiasm and determination served as an inspiration to her training partners. A tribute from NSW Athletics and Sutherland District Athletics Club described her as a "greatly loved member of our community" whose "magnetic smile and warm personality have left a permanent mark on Australian athletics."
Her passing has prompted tributes from across the athletics world. One individual recalled Ward's helpful and knowledgeable assistance while shopping for running shoes just weeks before her death, describing her as having a "beautiful presence."
Ward's death comes weeks after the passing of Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton, 25, who died during a family holiday in Thailand. Stapleton, a finalist in the Stawell Gift, was reportedly involved in a scooter accident on the island of Koh Samui.
