Atletico Madrid has once again strongly refuted Barcelona's attempts to sign player Julian Alvarez, accusing the Catalan club of disseminating "lies and half-truths." The dispute underscores a persistent tension between the two La Liga rivals over the player's future.
Barcelona's initial offer for Alvarez reportedly came in May. However, Atletico Madrid maintained a firm stance, adamantly refusing to sell the player to Barcelona. This resistance was publicly communicated through a series of social media posts that criticized Barcelona's pursuit as a "smear campaign."
Alvarez's future remained a significant topic of discussion as he participated in the World Cup with Argentina. In June, a substantial offer of €150 million (approximately £130 million) was made by Atletico's city rivals, Real Madrid. This bid was also rejected by Atletico, who acknowledged the proposal while referencing Alvarez's €500 million (£430 million) release clause.
Following these events, Alvarez himself indicated a desire for a transfer. After Argentina's victory over Austria in June, he told media outlets that he had spoken with Atletico and believed "the best thing for everyone is a transfer" as he wished to "fulfil my dream." This statement suggested a willingness to leave Atletico, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly among the interested clubs.
Barcelona's interest in Alvarez was reportedly driven by their search for a long-term successor to striker Robert Lewandowski. Despite the player's expressed desire for a move and interest from other clubs, Atletico Madrid's chief executive, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, stated that the club would not sell Alvarez, "even for 200m euros (£170.8m)."
