Aston Villa is reportedly nearing an agreement to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, a move that intensifies speculation surrounding the potential departure of current first-choice goalkeeper Emi Martinez. Sources indicate the deal for the 23-year-old Japanese international could be in the region of £30 million.
Suzuki, born in the United States, qualifies to play for Japan through his mother. He represented Japan in all four of their matches during the recent World Cup and has made 59 appearances for Parma since joining from Urawa Red Diamonds in 2024. Prior to his move to Italy, he played for J-League side Urawa Red Diamonds.
Martinez's future at Villa Park has become increasingly uncertain, with Juventus reportedly showing interest. While Aston Villa's director of football operations Damian Vidagany had previously stated Martinez would remain with the club, a departure before the summer transfer deadline now appears more probable. The Argentina international joined Villa from Arsenal for £17 million in 2020 and has since made 256 appearances, playing a key role in the club's Europa League victory in May, which ended a 30-year trophy drought.
Martinez, a 2022 World Cup winner and runner-up in the most recent World Cup, was given time off following the tournament. He, along with Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins, missed Aston Villa's Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. Martinez was expected to return to full training this week in preparation for Villa's Premier League opener against Brighton on Sunday.
