Australia's vice-captain Ash Gardner will continue in her leadership role following an investigation into an affair with teammate Georgia Voll. Cricket Australia stated that while the personal relationship is a private matter, additional measures will be implemented to manage potential conflicts of interest, particularly concerning team selection.
Gardner addressed the situation on her Instagram Story, acknowledging the need to address her relationship status given her vice-captaincy. She expressed gratitude for the Cricket Australia Board's support of her continued leadership and her commitment to her role and teammates.
"I am grateful that the CA Board has chosen to support my continued leadership," Gardner wrote. "I look forward to playing a strong role as a leader and providing the best possible support for my teammates in the season to come."
The investigation was initiated after Gardner's ex-wife, Monica Wright, reportedly named the teammate involved in the affair. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg noted that Gardner is highly regarded and her leadership position is maintained. He emphasized that while personal relationships occur within the team, specific protocols will be enhanced to ensure that perceived or actual conflicts, such as those related to selection, are handled appropriately.
Gardner also issued a statement regarding her separation from Wright, expressing sorrow for any pain caused and wishing her well for the future. She requested privacy for all individuals involved and stated her intention to make no further public comments on the matter.
"I am grateful for the time Monica and I shared and sorry for the pain this has caused. I wish her nothing but happiness and success in the future," Gardner stated. "I won't be making any further public comment on this matter at this time and ask that the privacy of those involved is respected."
Gardner, who is a vice-captain, and Voll, who is not a vice-captain, were involved in the relationship, raising questions about a potential power imbalance. Cricket Australia's decision reflects their assessment of Gardner's standing and their approach to managing such situations within the team structure.
