Arizona Cardinals tight end Travis Vokolek announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 28, citing a severe neck injury. The injury, which occurred last October, ended his 2025 season prematurely and has now led to the decision to retire from the sport altogether.
Vokolek shared on social media that multiple consultations with doctors and neurologists resulted in the medical recommendation to retire. "After numerous visits with doctors and neurologists over the past couple of months, I have been advised to medically retire from the NFL due to a serious neck injury that I suffered this past season," he wrote.
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to fulfill his childhood dream of playing professional football for the past three years, highlighting the life lessons and memories gained from the sport. Vokolek also extended thanks to his teammates, coaches, trainers, and especially the Arizona Cardinals training staff for their support and first-class care during his recovery.
His wife was also acknowledged for her unwavering support throughout his NFL career. "She has never wavered and has been extremely supportive through it all," Vokolek stated.
The injury occurred last October during a kickoff return against the Indianapolis Colts. Vokolek was carted off the field after appearing not to move following a block attempt. Players from both teams gathered around him as trainers attended to the situation. He was placed on a backboard, transported via cart, and gave a thumbs-up as he left the field before being ruled out of the game.
Vokolek played college football for Rutgers and Nebraska before signing with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He did not play in any games for the Ravens and subsequently signed with the Arizona Cardinals in December of the same year.
