Kimi Antonelli secured victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, a result that appeared unlikely for much of the race. The win was significantly aided by a virtual safety car period that benefited Antonelli and a prolonged pit stop for Lando Norris, who had been leading.

Norris, driving a strong race in his upgraded McLaren, had built a lead of over six seconds before a pit stop that lasted 7.0 seconds dropped him to fifth place. Antonelli, who had pitted under the virtual safety car triggered by Lance Stroll's Aston Martin hitting the wall, inherited the lead. Norris eventually recovered to finish third, just behind Antonelli and second-place Max Verstappen.

Antonelli, in only his second season and at the age of 20, has now won eight races this campaign. This latest victory extends his lead in the championship standings over teammate George Russell, who finished fifth, to 81 points with nine races remaining. Norris trails Antonelli by 106 points, while Lewis Hamilton retired early with brake issues and is 101 points adrift.

The race also saw an early incident between Hamilton and Verstappen on the opening lap, with Verstappen eventually yielding a position after a verbal exchange with his engineer. Hamilton's subsequent mechanical problems ended his race prematurely.

Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, having led part of the race before his late pit stop. Antonelli ultimately crossed the line 4.3 seconds ahead of Verstappen, with Norris a further 0.7 seconds behind.
