The New York Mets have appointed Andy Green as interim manager for the remainder of the season, a day after firing Carlos Mendoza. Green, 48, who previously managed the San Diego Padres, will step into the role immediately.

This marks Green's second stint with the Mets organization. He played four games for the team in 2009 as a utility infielder and most recently served as the Senior Vice President of Baseball Development. He was a candidate for the managerial position at the end of the 2023 season when David Stearns took over as president of baseball operations, but the job ultimately went to Mendoza.

Green managed the Padres for four seasons from 2016 to 2019, compiling a 274-366 record and failing to reach the postseason. His teams finished twice in fourth place and twice in last place in the NL West during his tenure.

The Mets currently face significant challenges this season, having fallen short of high expectations despite acquiring considerable talent. The club's performance has led to the dismissal of Mendoza and the transition to Green in an effort to reshape the team's trajectory for the rest of the year.
