Andreas Almgren of Sweden won the New York City Marathon in his debut appearance in the event. On the women's side, Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya claimed victory for the second time.
Chepkirui won the women's race in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds, pulling away from her compatriot Hellen Obiri in the final stretch. American runner Jessica McClain finished second, overtaking Obiri in the closing moments. McClain finished 6 seconds behind Chepkirui, marking the first time a U.S. woman has placed in the top three since 2018.
The race, which passed through all five boroughs of New York City, marked its 50th running. Approximately 60,000 runners started the marathon on Sunday, with nearly half of them being women. The initial running of the race had just over 2,000 competitors, including 88 women.
