Andreas Almgren of Sweden and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya emerged as the winners of the New York City Marathon on Sunday, leading a field of nearly 60,000 competitors, the largest number in the event's history.

Almgren, 31, completed his New York debut with a winning time of 2:06:01, narrowly missing the course record of 2:04:58 set the previous year. In the women's race, Chepkirui, 35, secured her second New York City Marathon victory with a time of 2:24:36. This win marks her second time triumphing in the race, having previously won in 2024.

Almgren dethroned the 2025 champion, Benson Kipruto of Kenya, who finished fourth this year. Almgren pulled away from Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa in the final mile to secure his victory by 13 seconds.

Chepkirui established a lead over fellow Kenyan Hellen Obiri in the final 150 meters. American Jessica McClain finished second, overtaking Obiri in the closing seconds.

This year's marathon, the 50th running of the event, featured a slight rerouting of a one-mile stretch through The Bronx. The adjustment was made following complaints from residents about the impact of the previous course on access to amenities.
