Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas has opted to join Women's Super League club London City Lionesses after her departure from Barcelona. The 32-year-old midfielder left the Spanish club in May after a 14-year tenure and is widely considered one of the greatest players in women's football.

Sources close to Putellas indicated she selected the South London club over Boston Legacy in the United States, narrowing down a list of numerous interested parties. Although the Lionesses are reportedly confident of finalizing the deal, club sources state that no final agreement has yet been reached. This potential signing represents a significant acquisition for London City Lionesses, an independent women's football club noted for its ambitious moves in the transfer market. The team finished sixth in their debut top-flight season last year.

Putellas concluded her time at Barcelona having won 38 trophies, including 10 league titles. She scored a club-record 232 goals in 507 appearances, making her second on the all-time appearance list for the club. Her international career includes winning the World Cup with Spain in 2023 and finishing as a runner-up in Euro 2025. Putellas missed Euro 2022 due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, returning to play at the end of the following season. Since regaining full fitness, she has replicated the form that earned her consecutive Ballon d'Or awards in 2021 and 2022.

Reports suggest London City Lionesses have been pursuing Putellas since January, with a consistent belief in their ability to secure a deal. She is expected to join on a free transfer after her contract with Barcelona expired, though the club is understood to have offered substantial wages.
