Alexia Putellas, widely recognized as one of the greatest players in women's football, has signed a three-year contract with London City Lionesses. The move marks a significant acquisition for the club and is being hailed as one of the biggest developments in the sport's history.

Putellas, a 32-year-old Spanish midfielder, departed Barcelona in May after a 14-year tenure, during which she secured 38 trophies, including 10 league titles. Her departure from Barcelona attracted interest from numerous elite clubs globally.

She was officially presented in New York City by London City's owner, American billionaire Michele Kang. "I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter with London City Lionesses," Putellas stated. "The club's ambition and its steadfast commitment to growing as a women-only independent club resonate deeply with me."

Putellas expressed her eagerness to contribute on the pitch and in off-field initiatives. "I look forward to making an impact on the pitch as we challenge for titles," she said. "Off the pitch, building on my passion for youth development, I am equally excited to work with Michele in elevating women's football in England and on the global stage."

Last season, Putellas captained Barcelona to their fourth Champions League title. In contrast, London City finished sixth in their debut Women's Super League campaign. The signing represents a notable achievement for London City in their pursuit of ambition.

According to BBC Sport, Putellas chose London City over Boston Legacy, the two finalists in contention for her signature. Kang emphasized Putellas's significance to the club's vision, stating, "Alexia Putellas embodies the pinnacle of talent, dedication and vision in women's football. Her decision to join our independent, women-first club is a powerful endorsement of what we are building. This is more than a signing. It is a bold statement about the future of the sport."

During her time at Barcelona, Putellas scored a club-record 232 goals in 507 appearances, placing her second on the club's all-time appearance list. She was a member of the Spanish squad that won the World Cup in 2023 and participated in the Euro 2025 final, where Spain was defeated by England.

Putellas previously suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that ruled her out of Euro 2022. Following her return to full fitness, she recaptured the form that led to her consecutive Ballon d'Or awards in 2021 and 2022.

She joins London City on a free transfer after her contract with Barcelona expired. Reports suggest she is now the highest-paid player at London City.
