Alexi Lalas, a former U.S. soccer player and current analyst for Fox's World Cup coverage, has responded to persistent on-air barbs from French World Cup winner Thierry Henry and former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The dynamic between Lalas, Henry, and Ibrahimovic has been a notable subplot during the broadcast, with the latter two frequently referencing their more prestigious playing careers and dismissing some of Lalas's game analyses. Ibrahimovic previously remarked "You're welcome, America" when Lalas was moved out of the studio for a U.S. match.
During a recent broadcast, Ibrahimovic directed a remark at host Rebecca Lowe's attire, saying, "Rebecca, you look like you dressed for a funeral. Alexi is alive, don't worry." This prompted Lalas to retort, "You look like you should be welcoming people to Fantasy Island," referencing the 1970s and 80s television drama where characters wore distinctive white suits and visited a resort.
Lalas, 56, delivered the line while playfully patting Ibrahimovic on the back, a comment some viewers interpreted as a successful counter-jab. Online reactions to the exchange suggest Lalas landed the remark effectively, with some noting that Ibrahimovic might not be familiar with the show.
One viewer commented, "Lalas finally got one back on the scoreboard. He nailed that." Another added, "Alexi nailed it with Fantasy Island, but unfortunately Zlatan probably had never seen the show." The commentator chemistry, even with its friction, has drawn praise from some viewers who find the roast dynamic entertaining.
Earlier, Lalas had also joked about "carrying the show" when Lowe reintroduced him to the panel after his trip to Seattle, an attempt at humor that reportedly elicited laughs from Henry and Ibrahimovic.
The World Cup continues with matches including Argentina facing Austria and France playing Iraq.
