Trent Alexander-Arnold has spoken out about the abuse he has faced since his departure from Liverpool to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2025, admitting that the backlash has been "hurtful."

Alexander-Arnold, who signed a six-year deal with the Spanish club, noted that his transfer caused anger among some Liverpool fans who felt he let his contract run down, impacting the club's ability to secure a substantial transfer fee. He ultimately moved for £10 million, with Real Madrid signing him ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

In addition to online abuse, a mural dedicated to the player was defaced with the Spanish phrase "adios el rata," meaning "goodbye rat," prior to his return to Anfield for a Champions League tie last season.

"Abuse online and threats made via social DMs or in other ways are a sad part of life in 2026 if you're in the public eye and doing things that create a lot of attention," Alexander-Arnold told the Daily Mirror. "I choose to keep those things away from me because they don't feel real. I can rationalise that by knowing it's not representative of a football club I love, Liverpool, and it's not representative of my home city."

Alexander-Arnold also experienced boos upon his introduction as a substitute during his return to Anfield. He stated that he could understand the reaction but hopes for greater understanding from Liverpool supporters over time.

"The booing and disappointment from Liverpool supporters is something I'm absolutely able to shoulder. I can understand it, in my own way," he added. "I heard a lot during that period that Liverpool fans didn't want to be told how to feel or think, and I agree. But I hope one day there'll be a degree of understanding about the decisions I wanted to make around my own life."

He continued, "It hurts because of how much I've put into the club over the course of 20 years and the sacrifices I made for the club during that period. So of course it hurts, but I understand the disappointment. I even understand anger expressed through booing."

Alexander-Arnold, who enjoyed a trophy laden spell at Liverpool, expressed hope fans will understand his decision in time

During his tenure at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold achieved significant success, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2019, along with the FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

His debut season with Real Madrid was mixed, as the club finished trophyless for a second consecutive campaign. Alexander-Arnold made 35 appearances but his season was hampered by injuries.
