Alexander Ovechkin has signed a one-year contract to return to the Washington Capitals for another NHL season, the team announced Thursday. Ovechkin, the league's all-time leading goal scorer, expressed his excitement to rejoin his teammates and compete for a playoff spot.

The deal carries a $4.25 million cap hit, which includes a $1 million base salary, a $4.75 million games-played bonus (triggered by playing 10 games), and a $3.25 million signing bonus. This represents a significant pay cut for the veteran forward, giving the Capitals more financial flexibility for other roster moves.

Ovechkin, who is nearing 41 years old, is coming off a season where he appeared in all 82 games, recording 64 points with 32 goals and 32 assists. Despite a slight dip from the previous year, his production remains at an impressive level, and he continues to play a physical style of hockey.

The decision to return was anticipated by many, particularly after Ovechkin's interactions with the Pittsburgh Penguins at the end of the season, which suggested he was not ready to retire. He stated his health is good and his desire to play and win remains strong. Ovechkin is expected to join his teammates in September as they prepare for the upcoming season.
