Alex Ovechkin has agreed to a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals, committing to his 22nd NHL season at the age of 40. The team announced the signing on July 2, 2026.
"I'm back!" Ovechkin stated in a press release. "Thank you to everyone for giving me and my family the time to make this decision. I'm healthy. I love playing hockey and competing to win. I'm excited to come back and join my teammates so we can fight for a playoff spot and have a chance to win. See you in September, DC!"
The contract carries an average annual value of $1 million and includes incentives. Ovechkin had remained non-committal about his future throughout the previous season before ultimately deciding to continue his career with the Capitals.
