Jeremy "Ryan" Lambert, a 16-year-old wrestling state champion from Alexandria High School, died Friday from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash. The incident occurred approximately six miles east of Ohatchee, Alabama.
According to reports, Lambert was driving a 2007 Jeep Cherokee when the vehicle veered off the road, struck an embankment, and overturned. Investigators stated that Lambert was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The official cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Lambert was preparing to begin his junior year at Alexandria High School. He had recently secured his second consecutive Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 1A-4A state championship in February, defeating Noah Rains of St. James. His victory contributed to Alexandria High School finishing second in the state team rankings.
News of Lambert's death prompted widespread mourning within the wrestling community and beyond. His high school team shared a tribute on Facebook, remembering him as more than just a champion. "Ryan wasn’t just a state champion he was the kind of kid who could walk into a room and make it better," the post read. "No matter if it was in the wrestling room, at a tournament, or just being around the team, he was always cutting up, laughing, and making people smile. He competed hard, represented Alexandria with pride, and left an impact that went way beyond wins and medals." The team added, "You’ll always be part of this wrestling family, Ryan. Once a Valley Cub, always a Valley Cub."
Alexandria wrestling coach Frank Hartzog expressed his grief in a statement to the Calhoun Journal, calling the loss "heartbreaking and still in disbelief." He extended his thoughts and prayers to Lambert's family and loved ones. The principal of Alexandria High School, Derek Cobb, noted the "outpouring of love and support" the school had received in the wake of the tragedy. Coaches and schools from across the county and state have also shared their condolences for the young athlete.
