Destanee Aiava, the tennis player who recently switched her national allegiance from Australia to New Zealand, has secured her first professional title since coming out of retirement and changing her representation.

Aiava, 26, won the W15 Brisbane tournament without dropping a set, defeating Australia's Belle Thompson 6-2, 6-3 in the final. This victory marks a significant milestone for the athlete, who had previously announced her intention to retire in February, citing a "racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile" culture within the sport. At the time, she described tennis as a "toxic boyfriend."

However, Aiava reversed her decision to retire in June 2026, confirming she would continue playing after the 2026 season. With this renewed commitment came the announcement that she would no longer represent Australia. Her win in Brisbane is the first professional title she has claimed under the New Zealand banner.

The triumph comes during a period of immense personal hardship. Aiava has been sharing updates about her father, Hassan Aiava, a strength and conditioning coach, who has been in a coma since April after being admitted to the ICU with a fractured skull. She revealed in an Instagram story that she has been texting her father updates on her life, including news of her victory, in the hope he might read them if he wakes.

"At first I was texting dad updates hoping he'd be able to look through his phone and catch up on everything he missed," Aiava wrote in her post. She also spoke about the difficulty of grieving someone who is still alive, a sentiment she shared after her father missed her birthday due to his coma. She mentioned struggling with the thought of him missing her brother Toriq's birthday as well.

Earlier in the year, Aiava shared a GoFundMe page for her father's recovery, explaining that doctors had given a grim prognosis, suggesting the best-case scenario was a vegetative state or the possibility of him not waking up. She noted that the decision regarding his breathing tube and supportive care was not hers or her brother's to make, as they were not considered next of kin. She expressed a mix of hope for a miracle and growing anger as the situation continued. The funds were intended for his recovery or funeral expenses.
