Sydney Swans forward Tom Papley dedicated a second-quarter goal celebration to retired NRL player Jai Arrow during Thursday night's top-of-the-table AFL clash against Fremantle. Papley performed a bow-and-arrow gesture, later explaining it was part of the 'Jai July' campaign to support Arrow following his diagnosis with motor neurone disease (MND).

Papley, who had returned to the team after a six-week injury layoff, made an immediate impact in the significant match. "Yeah that's for Jai July. Jai Arrow, hope you're going well mate, keep fighting brother," Papley told Channel Seven during halftime, confirming the tribute.

The rugby league community has been rallying behind Arrow throughout July with the campaign aiming to raise awareness and funds after his medical retirement. Players across the NRL have been encouraged to perform the bow-and-arrow celebration after scoring tries, with corporate partners donating for each try during NRL and NRLW seasons. Fans are also participating in fundraising initiatives.

Arrow has become a notable figure beyond rugby league since revealing his diagnosis. He was a special guest at the AFL's annual Big Freeze for FightMND event in June, tossing the coin before a match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. His appearance, alongside AFL captains, was seen as a display of unity between the AFL and NRL in support of those living with MND. Queensland State of Origin star Selwyn Cobbo also performed the arrow celebration after scoring in a recent series decider, further demonstrating growing cross-sport support for Arrow.

Papley's tribute occurred during a match that saw Fremantle achieve a significant comeback. Sydney had established a 23-point lead in the third quarter, while Fremantle struggled to convert scoring opportunities before halftime. The Dockers then scored 14 goals to Sydney's five in the second half, ultimately winning by 38 points and solidifying their first-place position on the AFL ladder. Charlie Curnow scored five goals for Sydney, while Josh Treacy was instrumental for Fremantle with four goals after halftime.
