Swimmer Adam Peaty-Ramsay has indicated that a rift within his family is affecting his performance, stating he has felt "off" this week following his failure to secure a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. The comments came just hours after his mother, Caroline Peaty, publicly declared her continued support for her son, albeit from a distance.
Peaty-Ramsay, who won bronze in the 50m breaststroke final, admitted in a post-race interview that he has experienced "ups and downs" throughout his career and has struggled with his form in Glasgow. "The last two years have been tough to get the speed back," he said. Reflecting on his performance, he added, "I've felt 'off' this week and I don't know why. We are trying new things."
This marks the first major competition where Peaty-Ramsay's parents have not been present poolside to support him. His mother, Caroline, stated that she and her husband, Mark, "expect nothing back" from their Olympian son, with whom they are reportedly embroiled in a significant family dispute. She indicated that she has been subjected to "vile" and "truly evil" online abuse following the public fallout.
Caroline Peaty shared on Facebook that she had been enduring the situation for over eight months and expressed a desire for her family to be left alone. She wrote, "It has taken a lot of thought and deep strength to write this post. There are many trolls on social media and making comments about us, which are truly evil and very untrue."
The family's estrangement reportedly dates back to 2024 when Adam and his wife, Holly, did not invite wider family members to their engagement party and wedding. Caroline Peaty was also reportedly not invited to Holly's hen party. Adam Peaty-Ramsay broke his silence on the feud earlier this year, stating there are "two sides to every story."
Following his 100m breaststroke bronze medal finish on Saturday, where he appeared to partly blame his performance on the family feud, Peaty-Ramsay acknowledged that the situation "has taken its toll." He described the "s***" he had been through this year as contributing to a tired display.
Team England's President, Olympian cyclist Dame Laura Kenny, commended Peaty-Ramsay for his emotional and vulnerable interview after missing out on gold. "It's what it's like being parents, isn't it?" Peaty-Ramsay responded to Kenny, becoming emotional again. He also shared that he has become more emotional since becoming a father, with his wife Holly expecting their first child in December.
In a subsequent Instagram post, Peaty-Ramsay reflected on his performance, calling his bronze medal a "bittersweet moment." He acknowledged that his career narrative cannot always be "filled with glory, victory and gold." He concluded with a message of positivity, stating, "Love always wins."
A relative, speaking anonymously, criticized Peaty-Ramsay's comments, stating, "The hurt you feel over a medal does not compare to the hurt you have caused your mother." The relative urged the swimmer to "take accountability for your own actions for once, Adam, instead of blaming us."
