Aberdeen FC has become the first club in Scotland to obtain a permanent license for the sale of alcohol during selected home matches at Pittodrie Stadium. This groundbreaking development, effective immediately, will be in place for the club's opening home fixture of the season against Hearts.
The decision follows two successful trial runs last season, with Aberdeen City Council granting the permanent license. Alcohol will be available for purchase in the Richard Donald Stand Lower concourse area, up to 30 minutes before kick-off. Feedback from fans during the trial periods was reportedly overwhelmingly positive.
However, the new policy will not extend to all fixtures. Alcohol sales will be prohibited at matches identified as high-risk by Aberdeen FC and Police Scotland. The club aims to provide a more modern and flexible stadium experience, with chief executive Alan Burrows expressing pleasure at securing the license and thanking supporters for their feedback on previous trials.
"We have worked closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the necessary safeguards and operating procedures are in place," Burrows stated. "The club is grateful for the positive feedback from supporters about how previous alcohol licence trials had improved the matchday experience and we look forward to introducing this enhancement from our opening home league fixture against Hearts."
This move represents a departure from existing legislation, which has largely banned alcohol sales inside Scottish stadiums, excluding hospitality areas, since 1980. Despite calls for reform, First Minister John Swinney has previously indicated no plans to review these laws. The controlled sale at specific matches may pave the way for other clubs in the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) to explore similar initiatives.
Aberdeen FC also plans to further enhance the matchday experience through entertainment and fan engagement activities at selected fixtures. These may include live music and family-friendly events. Detailed information regarding alcohol sales, designated serving areas, and stadium policies will be provided to supporters before the Hearts match. Alcohol consumption will be restricted to clearly designated areas and will not be visible from the pitch. Standard matchday safety protocols will remain in place, and sales will be confined to lower-risk matches.
In related news, former Scotland women's captain Rachel Corsie has joined the Aberdeen FC board. The Aberdonian, a qualified chartered accountant, brings extensive international playing experience and a professional background to the club. Corsie expressed her honor in joining the board and her hope to contribute to the club's continued progress, particularly in supporting the development of the women's and girls' programs.
