Despite playing with ten men for a significant portion of the match, Aberdeen has advanced to the Premier Sports Cup semifinals following a tense penalty shootout victory over Kilmarnock. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Aberdeen ultimately prevailing 3-1 on penalties at Rugby Park.
Aberdeen took the lead in the 52nd minute through Kevin Nisbet, who headed home a cross from Connor Ronan. However, the advantage was short-lived. Aberdeen defender Dan Happe received a second yellow card and was sent off, and Kilmarnock equalized from the resulting free-kick through substitute Tyreece John-Jules.
Marius Muller proved to be the hero for Aberdeen in the penalty shootout, saving three spot-kicks from Kilmarnock's John-Jules, Mark O’Hara, and Aaron Tshibola. Aberdeen secured their victory with successful penalties from Alexander Briedl, Ayoub Mouloua, and Jack Milne.
The match was not without further incident. Following Milne's winning penalty, a number of supporters invaded the pitch, with some attempting to provoke Kilmarnock's ultras. Authorities are expected to investigate the post-match crowd behavior.
Earlier in the first half, Kilmarnock had enjoyed more of the possession and created several chances. Djenairo Daniels saw an effort go wide, and Erik Ring forced a save from Aberdeen goalkeeper Marius Muller. Muller also had to make a sharp save from a Tom Lowery shot.
Following Happe's dismissal and John-Jules' equalizer, the game remained deadlocked. Both sides had opportunities in extra time. Lewis Mayo headed wide for Aberdeen, and Muller denied Toyosi Olusanya, while Kilmarnock's Nesta Guinness-Walker and John-Jules also tested the Aberdeen keeper. In a frantic finale, Muller made a double save from Guinness-Walker and Olusanya.
Manager Stephen Robinson acknowledged the team's fighting spirit but also highlighted the need for improvement in attacking quality and cohesion. The win provides a crucial boost for Robinson, whose side faces difficult league fixtures against Motherwell and Hibernian in the coming weeks.
