Former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been appointed as the new head coach of League One club Oxford United, the team announced Tuesday. The 35-year-old Welshman's move marks his first permanent managerial position after previous interim coaching roles with Cardiff City and the Wales national team.
Ramsey expressed his honor and excitement about the opportunity, citing the club's ambition as a key factor in his decision. "This is a moment I have been preparing for over many years," Ramsey stated. "I’ve played under some of the best managers in the game and experienced high-pressure environments throughout my career. I want to use what I’ve learnt to bring a culture of high standards, professionalism and work ethic to this talented group of players."
Ramsey, who earned 86 caps for Wales and also had a coaching role with the national team, takes charge of Oxford United following their relegation from the Championship. The club finished 22nd last season. He vowed to instill an "elite mindset" and a clear playing identity, emphasizing "elite habits" and daily improvement.
"My teams will play with a clear identity, be built on elite habits, with a commitment to improving every day," Ramsey added. "I want a squad that fights for the badge until the end, and one that makes our supporters proud. I understand the responsibility that comes with this role, and can’t wait to get started, meet the players, and connect with our supporters as we strive to bring success."
