The Los Angeles Rams may not have a definitive answer on Aaron Donald's availability for Week 1, a situation that could create strategic challenges for their opponent, the San Francisco 49ers.
Donald returned to the Rams on Sunday after more than two years away from football, leaving the team just over a week to assess his readiness for their season opener against San Francisco, scheduled to be played in Australia. However, ESPN's Dan Graziano reported that a debut in Week 2 or 3 appears more probable than Week 1, though he noted that a Week 1 appearance remains a possibility.
This uncertainty surrounding the 35-year-old defensive lineman could force the 49ers to dedicate significant preparation time to accounting for his potential presence. This includes strategizing where Donald might line up, adjusting offensive line protections, and deciding on the deployment of extra blockers. Such considerations are complex, especially with Myles Garrett also in the Rams' defensive front.
Even if Donald ultimately does not play in Week 1, San Francisco must still allocate resources to prepare for the possibility, creating a mental hurdle. NFL Daily's Jourdan Rodrigue suggested this ambiguity benefits the Rams, as opponents historically devoted considerable effort to scheme around Donald. This forces opponents to adapt week to week, making it harder to predict tendencies.
Donald's early-season role could be fluid and situational, making it difficult for opposing teams to anticipate his involvement or the frequency of his snaps. This allows the Rams to manage his workload gradually without rushing his return.
"The goal is to win the Super Bowl, not to max him out in weeks one, two, three," Graziano said, indicating the Rams' long-term approach to managing Donald's return.
Donald participated in individual drills during his first practice on Sunday and received a scheduled day off on Monday. Rams coach Sean McVay has acknowledged the possibility of Donald missing the opener but has not ruled him out entirely, leaving San Francisco to prepare for both scenarios.
Whether by design or circumstance, Donald's ramp-up period introduces an element of uncertainty that could serve as an additional strategic tool for the Rams as they head into Week 1 against the 49ers.
