The San Francisco 49ers' secondary is facing further strain as slot cornerback Nate Hobbs will be sidelined for several weeks due to a groin injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the severity of the injury, which occurred during a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans.
Hobbs' injury will prevent him from participating in the remainder of the preseason and will impact his competition for the starting nickel cornerback position against Upton Stout. Stout, who started at nickel last year, played in 16 games, recording 82 tackles, five pass deflections, one sack, and one forced fumble.
This latest injury adds to a growing list of concerns for the 49ers. Free-agent signee Jack Jones also sustained a hand injury during the preseason opener against the Titans and may miss some time. Previously, the team lost Ricky Pearsall for the season, while Nick Bosa remains week-to-week. George Kittle is recovering from an Achilles injury, and Christian McCaffrey has experienced tightness.
Injuries have been a recurring issue for Hobbs throughout his five-year career. During his one-year stint with the Green Bay Packers last season, he missed significant time. The year prior, while with the Las Vegas Raiders, he suffered a partially torn meniscus in the preseason opener, causing him to miss Week 1 and lingering for the remainder of the season, limiting him to 11 games.
