San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained severe injuries, including a concussion, a broken nose, three broken ribs, and a broken hand, in a car crash near his Northern California home on July 14. He required approximately 40 stitches for facial injuries following the collision with an SUV.

Shanahan was taken to a hospital and released the same day. The other driver involved in the crash was uninjured. Police have stated that both drivers cooperated with investigators and no citations have been issued, but they have not disclosed the cause of the accident or determined fault.

The team announced that Shanahan will participate in training camp activities on a limited basis as he recovers, with assistant head coach Chris Foerster and other coordinators set to handle head coaching duties. Doctors are not expected to clear Shanahan for full participation until his concussion symptoms subside, and the team has not provided a specific return timetable.

Shanahan, entering his 10th season with the 49ers, informed his fellow coaches of the incident on Tuesday. This upcoming season marks a significant one for Shanahan, as his 10th year will tie Bill Walsh for the longest coaching tenure in franchise history. He enters the season with 82 regular-season victories, placing him third all-time in team history.
