San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained multiple injuries in a car accident near his Palo Alto home on July 14, it was reported Saturday. The 46-year-old coach suffered a broken nose, three fractured ribs, a broken hand, and a severe concussion requiring over 40 stitches to his face. He was hospitalized but released the same day. The other driver involved in the collision was not injured, and authorities confirmed that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the incident.

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, a close friend of Shanahan, stated he had spoken with him following the crash. "Most importantly, thank God he and the other person involved is okay," McVay told reporters on Saturday. "Perspective is everything. We talk about that all the time as coaches, and everybody goes through different things. I think the most important thing is that he’s on the road to recovery."

McVay, who worked alongside Shanahan as assistant coaches with the Washington Commanders, acknowledged the incident was "shaking." He added, "I have as much respect for him as anybody and he’s a friend of mine, and I love him and hope that he’s going to have a great recovery."

Shanahan is reportedly healing well but continues to experience concussion symptoms. His wife, Mandy, and their three children are with him as he recovers. Despite the injuries, the 49ers organization confirmed that Shanahan "will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers."

Assistant head coach Chris Foerster is expected to assume a larger role during training camp, with support from new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. The 49ers' veteran players are scheduled to report for training camp on Saturday, with the first practice on Sunday. Rookies reported last week.

Shanahan, the son of two-time Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Shanahan, has led the 49ers since 2017. The team is considered a strong contender in the NFC for the upcoming season, which begins September 10 against the Rams in Melbourne. The roster includes key players such as Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Nick Bosa, and Brock Purdy.
