Wendy McGee, a 65-year-old from Derbyshire, has shared her journey of losing over five stone in six months through a strict meal replacement plan, marking a significant turning point in her health and self-confidence. Previously weighing 15 stone 11lb and a size 20 in January 2025, McGee experienced breathlessness, chronic acid reflux, and exhaustion, prompting concerns about her ability to manage daily life.
McGee described her past struggles with weight as a "wall of shame," with old photographs serving as painful reminders of her unhappiness. Despite clear medical tests, she recognized her weight as the primary cause of her health issues. Her weight fluctuations began in her early twenties, influenced by marriage, childbirth, and later, the stress of divorce. She also noted a pattern of comfort eating during periods of stress and busy family life.
She recounted a history of trying various weight-loss programs, including Slimming World, WeightWatchers, and Rosemary Conley, with limited long-term success. "I once lost over three stone, only to pile it all back on within a year. It was soul-destroying," she stated.
In December 2024, after a significant health decline, McGee re-engaged with a weight-loss program called LighterLife, which she had previously tried. This time, she committed to the strict "TotalFast" plan, consuming four meal replacement products daily for five months, alongside at-home ketone testing to ensure ketosis. Ketosis is a metabolic state where the body burns stored fat for fuel due to a severe carbohydrate restriction.
While the initial four days were challenging, marked by tiredness and headaches, McGee reported a rapid shift. "My hunger vanished, my energy soared," she said. "Within a week, I felt better than I had in years." By April 2025, she had lost 5½ stone, reaching a weight of 10 stone 4lb.
Crucially, this time McGee committed to the program's management stage, which involves gradually reintroducing real food and addressing the emotional aspects of eating. Weekly Zoom calls with her mentor and group members helped her understand and manage emotional eating and food addiction. "I realised I wasn’t weak. I wasn’t greedy. I was addicted to food," she explained.
McGee has since transitioned to a healthier diet, focusing on whole foods like fruit and lean protein, and has maintained her weight loss, now fitting into size 10 jeans. She reports a significant improvement in her energy levels, a reduction in menopausal symptoms, and a renewed sense of self-confidence, including an improved relationship with her husband. She highlighted the joy of being able to actively play with her grandchildren, a stark contrast to her previous limitations.
"I feel sad that I let food steal so much of my life. But I’ve got a second chance now – a second honeymoon with Jeffrey, a second youth with my grandchildren, a second life just for me," McGee reflected.
