A woman is reportedly on the brink of divorce due to her husband's "fat jab" addiction, which she says has destroyed their marriage, eliminated his sex drive, and created a miserable home environment. The wife, who has a personal history of anorexia, likens her husband David's use of Mounjaro, a GLP-1 weight-loss medication, to an alcoholic keeping a bottle of wine in the house, describing it as a constant source of panic and vulnerability.
David, 49, has lost three stone (approximately 42 pounds) in under two years, transforming his physique. However, his wife claims that in the 12 years they have been together, she has never found him less attractive. The couple, who have a four-year-old son, are facing marital breakdown over the issue, with the wife considering divorce if not for their child.
Personal Impact and Health Concerns
The medication, which David uses through an online clinic despite having a BMI of 25, has reportedly taken a significant toll on his health and personality. His libido has vanished, leading to an intimate life that has been nonexistent for 18 months. His wife states that his previous joie de vivre has been replaced by an obsessive pursuit of weight loss, making him highly strung and controlling. His culinary habits have also drastically changed; he now exclusively eats micro-portioned, bland meals from a specialized delivery service and eats at irregular times, no longer joining his family for meals.
The wife's concerns are amplified by her own history of anorexia, which she battled from age 15 to 24. She fears that the widespread availability of such drugs for non-medical purposes could foster a new generation of individuals with eating disorders. She believes that if Mounjaro had been available during her own severe struggles, it could have been fatal.
David's own relationship with food appears to have been negatively affected. While he previously struggled with emotional eating, his wife reports that he now makes himself sick if he inadvertently eats too much, a behavior she recognizes as symptomatic of an eating disorder.
Marriage Under Strain
The couple's social life has also diminished, with dinner parties and restaurant outings replaced by a silent kitchen table. The wife describes life with David as joyless, suggesting that the drug has seemingly suppressed not only his appetite but also his desire for life itself. She notes his lack of concern for the distress his medication use causes her, stating that when she raised the issue, he flatly refused to stop taking it.
Despite his physical transformation and increased confidence, David has become less affectionate. He no longer initiates sex and refuses when his wife does, and they no longer sleep in the same bed. She attributes these changes to his "midlife Mounjaro crisis," which began shortly after he sold his insurance business in late 2022 and experienced an identity crisis.
While David remains a devoted father to their son, his wife mourns the loss of the husband she once knew and the marriage they once shared. She is contemplating divorce but faces financial constraints, as she works part-time and they keep their finances separate, despite David having made a substantial sum from selling his company. She concludes that David has already shattered their relationship by making the weight-loss drug a third party in their marriage.
