Five organs donated by Katie Suarez, a jogger who was fatally stabbed in Brooklyn, have been successfully transplanted into four recipients, according to LiveOnNY, an organ-donation organization.
Among the donated organs were Suarez's heart, both kidneys, liver, and pancreas. She also donated the "gift of sight." The recipients, who range in age from 12 to 75, include three individuals from New York and one from Florida.
Suarez was jogging on Oct. 30 on the Shore Parkway Greenway when she was allegedly attacked. Prosecutors have charged Sayed Mohassib, a former NYPD officer and current Brooklyn elementary school paraprofessional, with her murder. Authorities stated that Mohassib allegedly told investigators he went to the area with a knife due to fears for his family's safety. Law enforcement sources described the attack as random.
Suarez, a bank teller and graduate of Brooklyn College, was on her way to meet her parents when she was killed. She was 28 years old.
"LiveOnNY is humbled and honored to be the stewards of these precious gifts of life so that Katie’s legacy and others may live on," said Leonard Achan, president and CEO of LiveOnNY. "Ms. Suarez saved the lives of four people with five of her organs to those waiting on the national transplant waitlist."
