A common fiber supplement, psyllium husk, is gaining attention for its potential to enhance the effectiveness of weight-loss medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy, and may also contribute to lowering cholesterol levels. While millions have turned to these GLP-1 injections for significant weight loss, some patients experience plateaus or underwhelming results. Experts suggest that incorporating psyllium husk, a readily available and inexpensive supplement, could offer a complementary approach.

John Lukey, a registered nutritionist from King's College London, explained that psyllium husk is a well-researched supplement that can increase feelings of satiety, or fullness. This effect can reduce overeating and aid in appetite regulation, making it a potent addition when combined with weight-loss injections. GLP-1 injections, originally developed for diabetes, mimic a natural hormone that signals fullness to the body, leading to reduced food intake and subsequent weight loss.

However, experts emphasize that these medications are most effective when coupled with a sensible diet, particularly one rich in fiber. Despite fiber's known benefits, including a potential reduction in the risk of heart disease and bowel cancer, a significant portion of adults in the UK do not meet the recommended daily intake. Psyllium husk, derived from the seeds of the plantago ovata plant, is presented as an accessible way to increase daily fiber consumption.

When mixed with water, psyllium husk swells to form a gel in the stomach, which can create a sensation of fullness and limit space for food, similar to the mechanism of GLP-1 injections. Studies have indicated that psyllium husk alone can contribute to weight loss. A 2023 review published in the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners found that overweight and obese adults who consumed psyllium husk before meals lost over 2 kilograms in less than five months. Furthermore, a 2018 meta-analysis suggested that a daily intake of ten grams of psyllium husk significantly reduced levels of LDL, or 'bad' cholesterol.

Experts note that while GLP-1 injections are effective appetite suppressants, they are not a complete solution. Adequate fiber intake is crucial for individuals using these medications. Mr. Lukey stated that psyllium husk can help users achieve optimal fiber levels, thereby supporting their weight-loss goals.

Careful use of psyllium husk is advised. It must be taken with substantial amounts of water—typically two glasses—to prevent potential blockages, as the supplement expands in the gut. Dr. Rubina Aktar, a neuroscientist at Queen Mary University of London, highlighted that consistency is key, with psyllium husk being most effective over several weeks when adequate hydration is maintained. This is particularly important for those on weight-loss medications.

For individuals aiming to discontinue GLP-1 drugs, increasing natural fiber intake is recommended. Research indicates that a significant number of people regain weight lost on these medications within a year of stopping. Experts also point to the importance of adequate protein intake and regular strength training in maintaining weight loss long-term. Mr. Lukey suggested that a daily psyllium husk supplement, combined with sufficient protein and strength training, could be critical for individuals seeking to maintain their weight loss after ending the medication regimen.
