Individuals taking oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications for weight management, such as Wegovy tablets, are advised by medical professionals not to consume them with morning coffee or tea. The FDA-approved prescribing information for Wegovy tablets states they should be taken on an empty stomach with no more than 4 ounces of water, and without any other liquids. Patients are instructed to wait a minimum of 30 minutes after taking the pill before consuming food, other beverages, or oral medications.
Medication Guidelines
As the first FDA-approved oral medication for chronic weight management, Wegovy tablets have distinct administration guidelines compared to their injectable counterparts. This is because absorption through the digestive system can be influenced by food and drink. Dr. Michael Hall, a board-certified physician and longevity specialist, confirmed that oral Wegovy requires an empty stomach and only water for intake. He noted that coffee, tea, juice, or other drinks can disrupt the medication's absorption process.
Dr. Hall suggests a specific morning routine for users of oral GLP-1 medications: Wake up, take the Wegovy tablet whole with up to 4 ounces of plain water (as the tablets should not be split, crushed, chewed, or dissolved), and then wait at least 30 minutes before eating breakfast, drinking coffee or tea, or taking other oral medications.
"Food and beverages other than water, and other oral medicines, can affect absorption if taken too soon," Hall stated. "The safest rule is 30 minutes of nothing by mouth except water after the tablet."
He further explained that GLP-1 medications can slow stomach emptying, which may affect the absorption rate of other oral medications. Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel concurred, emphasizing that GLP-1 pills should not be taken with caffeine and should only be taken on an empty stomach with water.
While drinking tea throughout the day may not interfere with oral GLP-1 absorption, patients are encouraged to consult their physicians for personalized advice. Siegel mentioned that certain teas, such as green, black, and white teas, can support digestion, while ginger and peppermint teas may help alleviate nausea.
