Moderna's stock price surged by 177% following the announcement of successful late-stage trial results for an experimental skin cancer vaccine. The company, known for its COVID-19 vaccine, stated that the treatment has shown potential in preventing the spread of melanoma and its return after initial treatment.

The experimental vaccine utilizes mRNA technology, similar to that used in Pfizer and Moderna's COVID-19 vaccines. This technology is designed to train the body's immune system to identify and attack cancer cells more effectively.

The trial's success led to a significant jump in Moderna's shares on Wall Street, with competitor Merck also seeing a 13% increase. Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, described the findings as a "pivotal moment for cancer research," aiming to make personalized mRNA cancer treatments a reality.

Lead investigator Professor Georgina Long called the results a "landmark moment" for melanoma treatment, suggesting it could help patients achieve longer periods of being cancer-free. Detailed study results are expected to be presented at a medical conference later this year.

Analysts noted the trial's success as a significant boost for investors, especially for Moderna, which has been seeking new avenues for growth after the demand for its COVID-19 vaccine declined. However, some caution that expectations should remain measured, as full trial data and overall survival results are still pending, and large-scale manufacturing of personalized vaccines could present challenges.

Following the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Moderna's share price had fallen from its 2021 highs. The company has increasingly focused on cancer vaccines as a key area for future development, with these recent trial results marking a significant step forward.
