Los Angeles County health officials are investigating a confirmed measles case in an individual who was infectious while traveling through Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) and visiting a Thrifty Rental Car Service location in Burbank.

This marks the seventh measles case reported in Los Angeles County this year. Officials identified potential exposure sites and times for the public.

Potential Exposure at Hollywood Burbank Airport

Individuals at Gate A4 of Hollywood Burbank Airport on June 17 between 8:45 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus. Passengers seated near the infected traveler are expected to be notified by their local health departments.

Exposure at Rental Car Facility

Potential exposures also occurred at the Thrifty Rental Car Service, located at 2627 N. Hollywood Way in Burbank. The public was potentially exposed on June 17 from 9:20 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. and on June 18 from 10:25 a.m. to 11:25 a.m.

Monitoring for Symptoms

Individuals exposed at either location on June 17 could develop measles symptoms between seven and 21 days after exposure, with the final day for monitoring being July 8. Those exposed at the rental car facility on June 18 should monitor through July 9. Health officials note that individuals who have had measles or received the recommended vaccine are likely protected but should still remain vigilant for symptoms. Those who remain symptom-free for more than 21 days after exposure are no longer considered at risk.

Measles is an airborne virus that can spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs, or sneezes. The virus can remain infectious in the air and on surfaces for several hours after the infected person has left an area. Symptoms typically include a fever above 101 degrees Fahrenheit, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a characteristic rash that usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

Public health officials are continuing their investigation to identify any additional exposure locations. This alert comes during peak summer travel season, with increased crowds in Los Angeles for events such as World Cup matches, heightening concerns for public health.

Last week, Los Angeles County health officials issued a similar warning regarding a potential measles exposure at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), a nearby Hilton hotel, and its shuttle service.
