The marshmallow plant, scientifically known as Althaea officinalis, is being recognized for potential health benefits that extend beyond its sweet-sounding name. Native to Europe and Western Asia, this plant has a history of medicinal use dating back to ancient Greece, and is now gaining attention from wellness advocates.

Supermodel Miranda Kerr recently shared on the podcast “Let’s Be Honest with Kristen Cavallari” that she incorporates marshmallow tea into her morning routine. Kerr prepares the tea by crushing the plant's leaves and brewing them with hot water. She described it as beneficial for the gut lining.

Beyond digestive health, research suggests the marshmallow plant may offer a range of benefits. Its fibrous root and leaves contain mucilage, a natural fiber that forms a gel when mixed with water. This gel is believed to soothe the throat, help loosen mucus, and potentially inhibit bacterial growth. The mucilage may also help protect the stomach and esophagus lining, potentially reducing irritation from acid reflux or conditions associated with a "leaky gut."

Studies have explored other potential advantages of the marshmallow plant. Some research indicates that extracts from the flowers might reduce the development of stomach ulcers in rats. Additionally, the plant's antibacterial properties could aid in wound healing, as suggested by a 2015 animal study on marshmallow root extract. A 2011 animal study also found that liquid marshmallow flower extract may improve levels of HDL, or "good" cholesterol, potentially contributing to better heart health.

Topical applications of marshmallow root have been investigated for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could help relieve skin irritation and inflammation from conditions like eczema or sun exposure.

It is important to distinguish the medicinal marshmallow plant from the processed confectionary product. Commercially available marshmallows are typically made primarily of sugar and do not originate from the Althaea officinalis plant. False claims on social media about eating marshmallow candy to treat colds have circulated, but these are unrelated to the herbal remedy.

Kerr, who founded the skincare line Kora Organics, has spoken openly about her health journey, including a diagnosis of proctitis, a form of irritable bowel syndrome, which influenced her dietary choices. She emphasized the principle of "food as medicine" and her preference for nutritious foods that support well-being.
