Social media influencer Joel M is aiming to break the silence surrounding hypospadias, a congenital condition that affects the development and function of the penis. Despite its prevalence, impacting approximately one in every 300 male births, Joel M highlights that the condition remains a topic rarely discussed openly.

Hypospadias occurs when the urethral opening is not located at the tip of the penis. Instead, it can be found anywhere along the underside of the penile shaft, or in more severe cases, extend to the scrotum. This can result in a penis that is smaller than average and misshapen. Individuals with hypospadias may experience difficulties with urination, sexual dysfunction, and fertility issues, along with an increased susceptibility to chronic urinary tract infections.

Joel M, who has documented his own experiences with hypospadias, including multiple surgeries to address complications, believes that stigma associated with the condition prevents many men from seeking necessary medical and emotional support. He shared on Instagram that growing up, he felt isolated, believing he was the only one experiencing the physical and psychological challenges of hypospadias.

"Yet 1 in every 300 [boys are] born with hypospadias, meaning there's around 15 million boys and men directly impacted by it," Joel M stated, emphasizing the widespread nature of the condition. "And yet because it involves the penis, no one speaks about it."

While the exact cause of hypospadias is not fully understood, experts suggest that genetics may play a role. Research indicates that a family history of the condition can increase risk, as can maternal age over 35. Some studies also point to potential links with exposure to certain chemicals or pesticides during pregnancy, though further investigation is needed.

Corrective surgery for hypospadias is typically performed in infancy, between 12 and 18 months of age. These procedures aim to reconstruct the urethra and reposition its opening. While some individuals may require only a single operation, more complex cases, like Joel M's, can necessitate multiple surgeries throughout life. These can include urethral reconstruction and, in some instances, the use of a suprapubic catheter to aid urinary drainage.

The condition can also have long-term effects on sexual health and fertility. Joel M has openly discussed his past anxieties about sexual function but has since found intimacy and has highlighted that fertility treatments remain an option for many affected men.

Other public figures have also spoken about their experiences with hypospadias. Former 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant Brendan Cole shared in 2018 that he felt self-conscious about the condition during his childhood and underwent 12 operations between the ages of two and 12.

Joel M's advocacy extends to raising awareness about secondary complications, such as urethral stricture disease, where scar tissue narrows the urethra, leading to a weakened urinary stream and pain. He has connected with many others facing similar challenges and believes social media is a vital tool for increasing awareness and fostering a supportive community.
