The Daily Mail and its charity Mail Force have launched "Dementia Carers Together," an appeal designed to provide crucial support to the UK's unpaid dementia caregivers. The initiative is being run in association with the Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer Scotland.
The appeal seeks to raise at least £1 million to fund new six-week courses aimed at offering practical advice and emotional resilience to those caring for individuals with dementia. These courses will cover topics such as managing challenging behaviors, navigating available services and benefits, and coping with the emotional toll of caregiving.
Currently, an estimated 2.5 million people in the UK act as unpaid dementia carers. Statistics indicate that a significant majority of these caregivers experience exhaustion and a negative impact on their mental or physical health, with four in five having reached a crisis point. The Dementia Carers Together courses are designed to address these needs directly.
Each course will consist of six two-hour sessions, with participants able to attend all or select individual sessions. The content is tailored to provide practical help with day-to-day care, information on entitlements such as diagnosis, benefits, and council tax reductions, and strategies for maintaining emotional well-being.
Courses are planned to be held across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, with Alzheimer Scotland delivering sessions in Scotland. The appeal aims to fund at least 864 sessions annually, benefiting tens of thousands of individuals. Approximately 80 percent of these courses will be in-person, with the remainder offered online to ensure accessibility.
Pilot courses are slated to launch in London, Peterborough, Wales, and Northern Ireland once the appeal surpasses £100,000. Sign-ups for the 2027 courses will open in the new year. The appeal's fundraising targets are set to allow for longer-term course funding: £1 million for one year, £2 million for two years, and £3 million for three years.
Should the funds raised exceed the program's needs, Mail Force will allocate the remaining money to the Alzheimer's Society for other initiatives supporting individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related conditions. Donations can be made online via the Mail Force charity website, by text, phone, or by cheque.
