Jan Young, a former Scottish newspaper editor and businesswoman, is now receiving constant care from her husband, Jim, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia last year. The diagnosis came two and a half years after her first symptoms emerged.

Young had a distinguished career, breaking the glass ceiling in the 1960s as a newspaper-woman and working for the UK government in aviation. After returning to Scotland, she ran a fashion boutique before leading a special-features unit at The Edinburgh Evening News. She later established a successful tablet business that sold across Scotland and was one of the lead stitchers for the Great Tapestry of Scotland.

Her husband, Jim, 82, described how Jan, 79, now struggles with short-term memory and needs daily support. He has taken over all household responsibilities, including cooking and managing her medication, while also reminding her of daily tasks. The couple met in London in the 1960s and have lived in Penicuik, Midlothian, for 55 years.

Jim praised the support from Alzheimer's Scotland but expressed concern about the limited NHS support for families dealing with dementia. He noted that unlike other serious illnesses, there is less direct medical and psychiatric attention available for the progression of dementia at a local level.

Despite her condition, Jan maintains a positive outlook. The couple, who have traveled extensively throughout their 60-year relationship, are planning a cruise to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary in January, when Jan will turn 80. Their daughter, Lara, lives in Australia and calls regularly.
