Jade Thirlwall Discloses Battle with Rare 'No Burp Syndrome,' Finding Validation

Singer Jade Thirlwall has publicly shared her diagnosis of a rare condition known as "no burp syndrome," scientifically termed Retrograde Cricopharyngeus Dysfunction (R-CPD). The revelation comes after the artist discovered information about the condition through online campaigner Gemma Renwick, leading Thirlwall to state she "finally feels seen and understood."

R-CPD is characterized by the inability to burp due to a malfunction of the cricopharyngeus muscle in the throat. This condition can lead to significant physical discomfort, including severe bloating, painful trapped air, chest and abdominal pressure, and gurgling sounds. These symptoms have reportedly impacted Thirlwall's life for years.

Thirlwall explained that the physical effects of R-CPD have resulted in persistent comments about her weight and body, particularly when she experiences bloating. "It's always been a fun fact that I can't burp but it's caused issues my whole life and I'm sick of people commenting on my weight and body onstage when I'm just bloated af," she stated.

One potential treatment for R-CPD involves a procedure called "throtox," which includes injecting Botox into the cricopharyngeus muscle to help it relax and release trapped gas. However, Thirlwall expressed concern that this treatment might affect her vocal abilities. "I want to get the throtox but worried it will affect my vocals," she shared.

Gemma Renwick, who is petitioning for increased NHS access to R-CPD treatment, expressed her gratitude for Thirlwall's support. Renwick highlighted the difficulty in raising awareness for the condition and urged Thirlwall to use her platform to help share the campaign and petition.

Thirlwall had previously alluded to her inability to burp in a 2023 TikTok video, humorously noting, "I've never burped in my life but I'm still stunning." The singer has also been open about her past struggles with eating disorders and her ongoing battle with body image pressures.

In a previous interview, Thirlwall detailed a "daily battle" against the temptation to use weight-loss medication like Ozempic, citing her history of eating disorders as a reason for caution. She emphasized that while she is currently healthier than ever, she still faces public scrutiny regarding her appearance, with online comments often questioning if she is pregnant whenever she posts a photo. She noted that this contrasts with the body-positive messaging promoted by her former group, Little Mix.

Thirlwall's struggles with food began in her teenage years, coinciding with the loss of her grandfather, and she was hospitalized for anorexia before auditioning for The X Factor.

Symptoms of R-CPD, or "No Burp Syndrome," can include a lifelong inability to burp, chest pain, stomach bloating, throat gurgling, and flatulence, often making social interactions stressful. Individuals with the condition may need to carefully manage their diet, avoiding foods and drinks like carbonated beverages that can exacerbate symptoms. The Botox treatment is typically performed under general anesthesia as a day surgery procedure.
