As temperatures rise, cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie, also known as the Queen of Clean, is advising Britons to adjust their bedding washing routines to combat discomfort and potential health issues.
Crombie states that during warmer months, beds work harder due to increased moisture production from the body, even if one doesn't wake up drenched in sweat. Combined with body oils, dead skin cells, pollen, and dust, bedding can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria and allergens, potentially aggravating allergies and impacting sleep quality.
Washing Frequency Recommendations
Crombie recommends washing bed sheets at least once a week during summer. She suggests an even more frequent schedule for those experiencing heatwaves, suffering from hay fever, or sharing beds with pets. "Your bed should be one of the cleanest places in your home," she noted, emphasizing that increased washing can significantly improve comfort, cleanliness, and sleep quality.
Pillowcases and Mattress Protectors
Pillowcases, which collect skincare products, makeup residue, hair oils, and sweat, are particularly important. Crombie advises changing them every two to three days during the summer months. This practice can also benefit individuals prone to breakouts, allergies, or skin irritation.
Mattress protectors, designed to absorb sweat and moisture, also require regular cleaning. Crombie recommends washing them every four to six weeks throughout the summer season.
Duvets and Pillows
Even lighter-weight duvets used in warmer months should ideally be washed every couple of months, depending on usage. Pillows require cleaning every three to six months and should be replaced when they no longer maintain their shape. Crombie concluded that clean bedding contributes to more comfortable sleep, a refreshed feeling upon waking, and the avoidance of unpleasant odors, ultimately enhancing the sleep environment.
